Let’s be honest: Who wouldn’t want to turn their blog into a full-time gig that brings in money while you sleep? Blogging is something that many people start as a hobby, but with a bit of effort (and a lot of patience), it can become a pretty solid income stream. But before you go in expecting to retire from your 9-5 within six months, there are a few things you need to know about making money from blogging—and I’ll be the first to tell you, it’s not an overnight success story.

Look, I know everyone says this, but it’s because it’s true: if your content isn’t valuable, people aren’t going to stick around. You’ve got to give them a reason to come back. Think about what you look for when you read blogs. Are you looking for someone who’s just rehashing the same old stuff, or do you want to find a fresh perspective?

I remember when I first started—I was cranking out post after post, but something wasn’t clicking. It wasn’t until I took a step back and really thought about what my readers needed that I saw things start to shift. What are they struggling with? What questions are they Googling at 3 a.m.?

If you can answer those burning questions, you’re on the right track. And trust me, even if it feels like no one’s reading at first, stick with it. If your content is genuinely helpful, the traffic will come.

2. Building an Audience: Your Readers Are Your Blog’s Lifeblood

Now, I don’t have a massive audience—yet! But I’m growing it, and I can tell you, building a loyal group of readers is crucial. Here’s what’s been working for me:

a) Consistency Is Key

When I first started blogging, I wasn’t super consistent. Sometimes I’d post two times a week, other times I’d go silent for a month. Guess what? My traffic showed it. Now I aim for consistency, even if it’s just once a week. It helps your readers know when to expect new content and keeps you top of mind.

b) Social Media: Use It (But Don’t Let It Use You)

I’ll be real with you—social media is a double-edged sword. It can boost your traffic if you do it right, but it’s also a time-suck if you’re not careful. My advice? Pick one or two platforms that you enjoy and focus there. Trying to do everything at once (Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.) will burn you out quicker than you think.

Right now, I’m sticking only with Pinterest. On this platform you need to be very patience because you won't see results for the first few months, but once you start growing it will be really consistent and will have a big impact on your blog trafiic.

c) Engage, Engage, Engage

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but it’s worth repeating: engagement matters. It’s not just about getting people to your blog—it’s about building a community. Respond to comments, ask questions, and make your readers feel heard. The more they feel connected to you, the more likely they’ll come back.

d) The Power of Email

This is something I’ve been meaning to get serious about, and if you haven’t started yet, I highly recommend you start building an email list as soon as possible. While I don’t have one in place yet, I’ve heard from countless successful bloggers that your email list is invaluable. It gives you a direct connection to people who are genuinely interested in your content. When I do launch mine, I plan to offer something valuable like a free guide or checklist, in exchange for sign-ups, and then keep in touch with regular updates.

Okay, let’s get to the good stuff—how to make money from blogging. Spoiler alert: it’s not just one thing. Here are a few strategies I’m currently testing:

a) Display Ads: The Passive Income Dream

If you’re just starting out, Google AdSense is typically the go-to for most bloggers. I haven’t set it up yet myself, but from what I’ve learned, it’s a decent starting point. However, for smaller blogs, the income from ads might be minimal at first—especially if you’re still working on growing your traffic, like I am. Once your traffic increases, you can look into higher-paying networks like Mediavine or AdThrive, which are known to offer better returns for larger audiences.

b) Affiliate Marketing: Recommending What You Love

This is one of the more exciting ways to make money because it doesn’t require a massive audience, and you can start immediately. Essentially, you recommend products you love, and if your readers buy through your special affiliate link, you get a commission.

I’ve dabbled in affiliate marketing through programs like Amazon Associates and Impact.com. One thing I’ve learned is that the best way to earn through affiliate links is to be genuine. If you wouldn’t buy it yourself, don’t promote it. Your readers can tell when you’re being authentic.

c) Sponsored Posts: Getting Paid for Your Voice

As your blog grows, brands may approach you to write sponsored content. I haven’t had any collaborations yet, but I’ve been researching and considering reaching out to smaller brands that I genuinely love. Don’t be afraid to pitch if you really believe in a product - just be sure to stay selective. Your readers’ trust is far more valuable than a quick sponsorship deal, and maintaining that authenticity should always come first.

d) Creating and Selling Your Own Products

While I haven’t launched my own product yet, it’s definitely on the horizon. Whether it’s an e-book, course, or digital product, creating something of your own can be one of the most lucrative ways to make money from your blog.

4. SEO: How to Get Google to Love Your Blog

If you want people to find your blog, you’re going to need to get comfortable with SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I know it sounds scary, but it’s not as complicated as it seems. Here’s a basic breakdown of what I’ve learned:

a) Keywords

Find out what people are searching for in your niche and sprinkle those keywords throughout your posts. But be careful—don’t go overboard. Google is smart and can tell when you’re trying to game the system.

b) Optimize Your Posts

Make sure your blog posts are easy to read and navigate. Use headings (like I’m doing here!), bullet points, and internal links to guide your readers through your content. Oh, and don’t forget to add images—they’re great for breaking up text and adding some visual interest.

5. The Long Game: Patience Is a Virtue

I’ll be real with you - blogging isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes time, dedication, and a lot of hard work to see results. I’m still in the process of growing my blog and figuring out what works, and you probably are too. But I believe if we stick with it, we’ll get there.

Be patient. Keep creating. Keep learning. And don’t be afraid to pivot if something isn’t working. The journey to making money from blogging is just that - a journey.
